High Hill Christian Church is a part of the fellowship of churches referred to as the independent Christian churches. Today there are approximately 5,500 - 6,000 such congregations with a membership near 2 million.
Our historical roots trace back to the early 19th century in a religious movement that came to be known as the Restoration Movement. The primary focus of the movement was a call for Christian unity. We are nondenominational and while we are not the only Christians, our desire is to be known as 'Christians' only.
Some of our identifying characteristics include:
- An emphasis on the authority of the Bible
We are a part of the church of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, who have chosen to meet for worship and have fellowship in the High Hill community (I Cor. 1:2). We are the body of Christ, and He is the head of this church (Eph. 1:22-23). We are founded on the teachings of the apostles and prophets which are recorded in the Old and New Testaments Scriptures commonly referred to as the Bible (Eph 2:19-20).
We strive not only to study, understand, and teach these scriptures, but most importantly to obey them, so that the world may know that Jesus is the Christ and that we are His disciples (John 8:31, 20:31). We choose to follow no other teachings than those coming form God's Word (Matt. 15:1-9).
We believe that our ultimate purpose in living is to glorify God by proclaiming Him to all people and by serving Him in every aspect of our lives. We believe that sin has separated all people from God (Rom. 3:23), but God is not willing that any should perish but for all to come to repentance (II Pet. 3:9b). This is why He commissioned us to go and preach the good news of the Kingdom of God to every person, and to guide those who believe this message into a saving relationship with Jesus Christ (Mark 16:15-16, Matt. 28:18-20).
We believe that every Christian needs to be equipped for works of service under the guidance of the local church leadership (Eph 4:11-23). We Have faith that God has enabled us to complete this mission through the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit given to us during baptism (Eze. 36:27, Acts 5:32).
We believe...
- Jesus Christ is the one and only Son of God, who died for our sins and arose from the dead. (1 Corinthians 15:1-8; John 3:16)
- The Bible is the inspired word of God - a lamp unto our feet and a light unto our path. (2 Timothy 3:16; Psalm 119:105)
- Every person has worth as a creation of God, but that all have sinned and come short of the glory of God. (Romans 3:23)
- Forgiveness of sins and the promise of eternal life are available to those who trust Christ as Savior and Lord. (John 3:16)
- Those accepting Christ should repent of sin, confess their faith, and be baptized (immersed) into Him. (Romans 6:1-6, 10:9; Acts 2:38)
- The Church is the body of Christ on earth, empowered by the Holy Spirit and exists to evangelize the lost, edify the saved, and care for the least of these. (Ephesians 4:1-16)
- Jesus Christ will one day return to earth and reign forever as King of kings and Lord of lords. (1 Thessalonians 4:13-18)
Membership
Today membership means different things to different people. We believe that being a member of a church is more than just having one's name on a membership role or attending a Sunday worship service every now and then. To us, membership is expressed by taking an active part in the life of the church. To be a member is to say, "High Hill Christian Church is the local congregation through which I have chosen to worship, serve, give and grow in my spiritual life."
For those who desire to become members, an opportunity is offered at the end of each worship service to meet with leaders in our congregation who can discuss the next steps in ones journey with Christ and the congregation. If a person has already been immersed, they will be asked to affirm their faith in Christ by acknowledging that Jesus is their Lord and Savior. If they have not been immersed, they will then be asked to acknowledge their acceptance of Christ followed by baptism.
It is always a joyous occasion in the life of our church to welcome new members into our fellowship.
